A sustainable future is one where we live and
work in ways that do not compromise the health and well-being of the world’s
people and environment.
Today, much more needs to be done before we are
able to achieve the goal of a sustainable future. If we continue on our current
path, we will be faced with a future of ever worsening droughts and floods,
increased scarcity of resources leading to increasing conflict for access to
them and increased diseases and lowered quality of life. The insurance industry
has suffered major losses because of the recent high frequency of large-scale
natural disasters. Weather-related losses were $48 billion for the first half
of this decade, compared to $14 billion for the entire previous decade.
Business can lead the way today and put us on
the path to a sustainable future by manufacturing goods and providing services
in more responsible ways.
